Eavestrough cleaning gets exponentially harder the longer you put it off.

Over time, your gutters get dirty. This dirt holds water, which traps more dirt and the gutters start to sag, so they hold more water, which traps more dirt… and soon the Hanging Gardens of Bonavista are created. Along the way, the downspouts have filled up with debris and need to be disassembled to be cleaned, the underground pipes are plugged and will need some serious effort to make effective. And the whole time, the water from your roof has been flowing over and saturating the soils around your home; significantly increasing the risk of water leaking into your basement. Giving those gutters a quick rinse every year, and making sure they are well supported and draining properly is easier than trying to replace them after they fall off.

Now this picture isn’t from Calgary, but I can’t stop inspecting just because I get some time off. The same story goes for keeping your roof clean as for your gutter. There are some special things that can keep organic growth under control for rain-forest like climates, but (un?)fortunately that’s not something we have to worry about in Calgary.
